Take Time To Imagine
As an author, artist and educator, JAYME HANNA MANSFIELD seeks to bring beauty and expression into her own life and the lives of those around her. Read more about what inspires her most and how she authentically embraces a creative career.
AS AN AUTHOR, ARTIST AND EDUCATOR, WHAT DO YOU FIND MOST FULFILLING ABOUT YOUR CAREER?
I love to tell stories—both in word, in art and as a teacher to instruct others who share the same passions. Expressing beauty, encouraging dreams and experiencing life through creativity is my sweet spot. There is never an end point to the creative process as it constantly challenges my imagination and perseverance to be bold, courageous and remain dedicated to my purpose.
WHAT'S THE MOST CHALLENGING ASPECT OF HAVING A CREATIVE CAREER AND HOW DO YOU OVERCOME THAT?
I am deeply passionate about writing, painting and teaching others in their creative pursuits, and this makes for a full plate of artistic efforts. There are stretches in which a manuscript sits idle on the computer, a partially completed canvas stares at me from the easel and content for an upcoming retreat or online course remains incomplete. That’s when the deceptive voice of doubt sneaks in.
However, the creative process never ceases. It may not appear active each day, but the creative mind is constantly working out plot details, making note of the changing colors of the wildflowers in our meadow and providing inspiration to share with others from all facets of life. There is much to be gained and enjoyed from taking time to dream and imagine.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO PI PHIS WHO WISH TO PUSUE A SIMILAR CAREER?
Be your best self and add goodness and beauty to the world. The artistic world is vast and ever-changing. You know you have found your sweet spot when you are faithful to creating from your authentic self, and in the same breath, you desire to uplift and bring joy to others.
WHO (OR WHAT) CONSISTENTLY INSPIRES YOU?
There is no shortage of inspiration from nature and our surroundings. Both in writing and painting, being observant of the changing landscapes, the ebb and flow of seasons and the interplay of people and animals in their environments is essential.
HOW DO YOU MEASURE PERSONAL SUCCESS?
I have learned to value and celebrate the milestones more as I add years to my life. The most rewarding way in which I measure personal success is when a reader, viewer or student shares how my art brings new insight, perspective and joy.
HOW HAS PI PHI MADE AN IMPACT ON YOUR LIFE?
Directly after college, a small group of Pi Phi sisters and I traveled in Europe. It was a life-changing and a cathartic culmination of our previous four years. I didn’t realize how profoundly our sisterhood impacted our personal growth, preparation for the next stage of life and the assurance we would always cheer each other on in the decades to come. Pi Phi friends, past and new, broaden and enrich my life— a refreshing reminder how we are all individuals and still cherish a common bond.
