CAUGHT IN THE ACT 5:50 p.m. — 200 block of South Atlantic Avenue Fleeing officer. A 21-year-old man from Pennsylvania was arrested during Bike Week after police said he attempted to flee after doing a “wheelie” on the road. According to his arrest report, the man accelerated “at a high rate of speed” and began weaving in and out of traffic when an officer activated his emergency equipment. The officer accelerated as well, and at one point, saw the man look over his shoulder to see if he was still being followed. The officer noted in the report that he was traveling at 86 mph and still could not catch up to the man. He was able to do so once the man pulled into a park-
ing lot. As the man was being detained, he told the officer that he hadn’t seen him and blamed it on his music.

ESCALATION 6:54 a.m. — First block of South Yonge Street Disturbance. Police responded to a local gas station in reference to a road rage incident after a 49-year-old Port Orange man turned in front of a truck and caused it to swerve into the median. According to the incident report, the 21-year-old Holly Hill man driving the truck (and his brother in another vehicle) followed the Port Orange man as he pulled into the gas station after exchanging words on the road, and cornered him in the parking lot. The brothers and their father began yelling at the Port Orange man, who then grabbed his handgun and placed it on the dash. One of the brothers then called 911 and said he had

been threatened with a gun, though after a police investigation, the reporting officer confirmed that the gun was never pointed at any of them, nor did the Port Orange man verbalize any threats. The officer then tried to explain to the brothers and their father that the man’s actions were justified, and that no crime had occurred, since no threats were issued. “They would not listen nor attempted to understand my attempts of explaining the gun laws in Florida,” the reporting officer wrote. The brothers kept stating that in their home state of Illinois, the Port Orange man’s actions were illegal. After speaking over officers and growing upset, the three men left.

Jackie loved her family, her Artsy Craftsy group, her dog Poppy, her friends, quilting, traveling in the family motorhome, thrifting, gardening, and being retired. Jackie is survived by her husband of 57 years, Neal Kelley, her son, Matthew Kelley, and her grandchildren, Sarah, Amber, and Christopher Kelley. She was preceded in death by her son, Scott Kelley, who she now joins in eternal peace.
The ninth-annual Tomoka Marathon took place in Ormond Beach on Saturday, March 19, bringing over 1,200 runners to town. In addition to the full marathon, a Boston Marathon qualifier, the race featured a half marathon and a 5K run/ walk, all starting and ending at The Casements. Funds raised at the event are returned to the local community in a variety of ways, per the Tomoka Marathon website. Donations are made to student and citizen groups who volunteer, and some of the past recipients have included: The Volusia Flagler Family YMCA, Seabreeze Boys cross

ARTique, which started with seven artisans selling “art and accents” a year ago, has grown to 18 artisans today.
Carrie Jepsen and her mother, Renata Holder, opened ARTique in April 2021, at 600 S. Yonge St., Unit 10. They previously owned a successful business in Dallas, Texas, and, wanting to move to the beach, they came to spend their time in Ormond. After a couple of years living in the city, they decided to re-create their shop in Ormond. A one-year anniversary sale is planned for April 14-16. The store is open 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday. Tomoka Marathon returns to Ormond
Jacqueline “Jackie” Kelley 1943-2022
Jacqueline “Jackie” Kelley passed away at age 78 on March 4, 2022 in Ormond Beach, Florida. Jackie was born in Stamford, Connecticut on June 14, 1943.
wife arrived, she noticed that their house had been broken into. Their dogs were locked in a game room near the front door, and clothing had been pulled out of their dresser drawers in their bedroom. All of the jewelry stand drawers in their closet were empty as well. One of their firearms was left laying on a pillow on the ground; another one was missing. Police determined that the burglars entered the home through the bedroom window, as there was dirt on the floor next to it and the reporting officer was able to open it without unlocking it. Tire tracks from a small “wheelbase vehicle” were seen leading from the driveway to the privacy fence on the west side of the home. Neighbors were contacted to see if their cameras had captured any relevant footage. The victims wished to press charges for the burglary, estimating $2,000 of valuables missing.
