The City of Miramar Police Department is hosting its 53rd Citizens’ Police Academy beginning August 9th. The 14-week program allows participants to learn and observe the internal operations of the Miramar Police Department. The program will host classes from 7:00 pm till 9:00 pm on Tuesday evenings at the Miramar Police Headquarters.
Citizens’ Police Academy is targeted at all community members who want to learn more about what the Miramar Police Force does on a day-to-day basis. Each session will host subject matter experts from different units within the force. Popular information sessions include meetings with the Street Crime Unit, members of the SWAT Team, and the K-9 unit’s friendly pups. Participation in the program is capped, be sure to contact Miramar Police public affairs at 954-602-4351 to register.
Miramar PD Youth Programs
The Miramar Police Department has a number of other community engagement programs in addition to the Citizens’ Police Academy. These include several targeted at engaging Miramar’s youth, including the Police Explorer Program and the Police Athletic League.
Police Explorers are involved in weekly training sessions, which familiarize the members with all aspects of law enforcement, including patrol procedures, traffic stops, arrest procedures, traffic, and criminal law, criminal investigations, traffic crash investigations, and firearms safety. Training is reinforced during annual local and state competitions attended by the Miramar Police Explorers.
The City of Miramar and community organizations call upon the Police Explorers to assist with traffic direction and parking control at events. Police Explorers are not used in assignments requiring police authority but to assist the community and police department under the direction and supervision of police department employees. The program brings the explorer into direct contact with members of the Police Department through details, meetings, and the ride-along program.
The Police Athletic League is a cooperative effort of the Miramar Police Department, community volunteers, business leaders and citizens. P.A.L. is funded by public contributions that go directly to the youth at P.A.L. Money raised at P.A.L. goes to funding first-rate programs and purchasing and maintaining equipment used by P.A.L. members. Donations enable community youth to participate in Police supervised activities. Any child, male or female, between the ages of 3 years and 17 years of age can participate at the Police Athletic League. All that is required is a willingness to participate.
