The annual Canoe Race, originally presented by BJ’s on the Water for 40 years, will take place on Tuesday. It will be hosted by Atlantic Beach House, which is now located in the 75th Street building previously occupied by BJ’s on the Water. ABH is adding its own twist to the occasion by partnering with the Ocean City Young Professionals Group to donate proceeds to its Christmas charity event.
Atlantic Beach House adopts Canoe Race By Jack Chavez Staff Writer (July 9, 2021) The Atlantic Beach House on 75th Street is carrying on a 40-year tradition, as it will take over hosting the Canoe Race on Tuesday. The event had been an annual staple of the former tenants of Atlantic Beach House’s restaurant building, BJ’s on the Water, drawing hundreds of participants and spectators. “It was popular demand (that led us to host the event),” Atlantic Beach
House Consultant Chris Reda said. “People were asking about it and saying they wanted to see it continue.” The canoe race is open to all adults ages 21 and over. Teams will consist of four participants – two males and two females – who will race in canoes around the island in the bay behind the restaurant. The entry fee is $100 per team. Cash prizes will be awarded, as well as prizes for best-dressed teams and
best team names. Closed-toed shoes must be worn. Free T-shirts for participants. Those who don’t preregister can sign up beginning at 9 a.m. on July 13. The races will kick off at 11 a.m. Reda said that Atlantic Beach House is adding its own twist to the race by donating proceeds to charity. “We’re partnering with the Ocean City Young Professionals Group,” Reda said. “We’re raising money for their Christmas gift-giving event.
They give out Christmas gifts for underprivileged kids in the county and do a shopping spree with them before Christmas, so that’s where the proceeds are going.” Reda said they hope to raise upwards of $5,000, but it will depend on the turnout. “We’re just excited to carry on a tradition.
