Buy local, dine local this winter It was a glorious start to Queen’s Birthday weekend in Nelson – the sky was blue, the sun was shining, and locals and visitors were glad to be out and about shopping, to have the chance to sit in a local café and drink great coffee, to meander around city parks or stroll along our beautiful waterfront and fabulous beach. Everywhere you looked, people had smiles on their faces and although we could only ‘mime’ hugs and blow kisses from afar, it felt good to see friends and familiar faces and have nice chats with people, while being mindful of the rules for level 2. Everyone was pleased the dreaded virus is being stomped out and no new cases are emerging, with some hopeful that level 1 might even happen sooner than June 22nd, when an announcement is
likely. It has been great news that the rules around social gatherings have been eased with up to 100 people now allowed to attend weddings, funerals and church services. It has also been welcome relief for local hospitality businesses which have been able to adapt the way they operate under level 2 restrictions, by enforcing one metre distancing rules, two hours maximum dining time, one server per table and so on. Locals and visitors have been delighted to eat out again, with bookings for many restaurants going well. Besides, most people are relieved to get a break from cooking yet another homecooked meal, and at the same time it’s an opportunity for us to show our support for local cafés and restaurants by dropping in for scrumptious locally-made
Rutherford Hotel food and beverages, or heading out for a nice meal with family or friends. Officially, Monday June 1st was the first day of winter in New Zealand, a stark reminder that for many hospitality businesses, it is the beginning of the hardest three months they will face in any giv-
en year. So as the days get colder and darker, spare a thought for local cafés, bars and restaurants which have already done it tough through the lockdown, and eat out over winter if your budget will allow. By all means, stay by inside by the fire where it’s warm and cosy
