For What It’s Worth by Dr. Melfi , Ph.D.
Idon’t have to tell you that if you have ever owned a pet, there is a bond of love so strong, that you would go to any expense, any extreme, to make sure your pet is cared for and healthy. Pets are there for you without question, loyal companions regardless of whether you are too tired to play with them, or even talk to them. ey don’t care if you’re in a good mood or you’ve had a horrible day, they’re just happy to see you. e day you bring your pet home is a day that will forever change your life, and open your heart to depths you didn’t know you could care, because they will never, ever betray you.
at is why, when their endof-life looms overhead, it is so heartbreaking. ey can’t tell you if they are in pain, if they need medicine, if they are too tired to take another breath. You don’t want your pet to su er needlessly, of course, but you also don’t know whether you should help your pet by putting them down, or let life take its course. You lose sleep, you cry your eyes out, you beg for a sign from above, what should you do, what should you do? My daughter lost both of her cats within weeks. ey were rescues, and both seventeen years old. e rst one seemed to be confused, unable to eat, withering away, and barely able to hold her head up. She couldn’t bear to put her down, because what if there was hope, even though she was told death was closing in. at night her cat died in her arms, and my daughter knew she had waited too long, that her cat su ered. Two weeks later, her second cat was failing quickly. at is where the story takes a positive turn. New to the area, she consulted Dr. Diamond, a veterinarian who had come out of retirement, because he knew his calling to help animals was not over yet. She brought her cat to him, and a er an x-ray and ultrasound, found that he had cancer in his kidney and spleen. Dr. Diamond drained some uid, and allowed her to take him home, but asked her to return in a week. As the week passed, he was again not doing well.
A er examination, Dr. Diamond sat her down and talked with her frankly, about his diagnosis and prognosis. He spent over an hour with her, giving her options, telling her she could take him home overnight to say good bye if she wanted, but that he was in distress. She made the decision to assist him in his journey to cat heaven. A erwards, Dr. Diamond told her she could spend as long as she needed in the o ce with her cat, all day if she wanted, and that she had made the right decision for her cat. He and his sta comforted her as she said her nal good bye. Two hours later, he called my daughter to make sure she was doing okay. One week later she received a card from him and the entire sta in the mail, again with condolences on her loss. is man is a saint among animals, the voice that they do not have, a man of great wisdom and compassion. His o ce, once called Animal Care Extraordinaire in Stuart, is now called Boulevard Animal Hospital on East Ocean Blvd. He is an animal whisperer.
For What its Worth, we couldn’t ask for anyone more experienced and kind with whom to entrust our pets.
