FairField — the tomato and Vine Festival will return to downtown Fairfield in august with the parks and recreation department taking the lead on what is expected to include much the same offerings from years past. this will be the 29th edition after last year’s event was canceled because of the covid-19 pandemic. the Fairfield city council broke ties with long-time coordinator Fairfield Main street association in February and parks and recreation has now taken the lead. the event is scheduled aug. 21-22.

Juanita Johnson, superintendent of parks and recreation, will coordinate this year’s tomato and Vine Festival. she said it will be in similar scope to previous years but planning is in the preliminary stages because of the pandemic. the focus right now is on sunday’s Fourth of July celebration.

“i am excited about it, except the Fourth of July event is ahead and it is all hands on deck,” Johnson said. “Once we get through that event we can start focusing on this one. we’re still working on details but i would say it will be similar to 2019, plus or minus a few things.” recent tomato & Vine Festivals have drawn upward of 25,000 visitors to historic downtown Fairfield. what once started out as just a one-block event has expanded to five over time. past festivals have featured music and food, contests featuring tomato eating and tomato recipes, a children’s fun zone and more. the vine part of the event was added in 2019 to give a nod to local wineries and let the event be a full celebration of the area’s agricultural heritage.

“any time we can help offer a community event is great,” parks and recreation director Kristina chamberlain said.
