The Free State Festival celebrates the free spirit of Kansas with films that challenge, inspire and entertain. This signature annual event brings independent films, live music, comedy and art installations to venues throughout the vibrant city of Lawrence, Kansas. The festival is made possible through programming support from community partners, its sponsoring organization, the Lawrence Arts Center and the City of Lawrence’s Transient Guest Tax Grant Program.

This Kennedy Center Access/VSA program is specially designed for students of all abilities, with specific instruction developed for disabled students. Throughout the week, we will investigate storytelling on-screen and off as we learn about theater performance and filmmaking to create a collaborative short film.

Honk! Jr., the Musical

Honk! Jr. is a heartwarming celebration of being different. Based on “The Ugly Duckling” by Hans Christian Andersen, Honk! Jr. tells the story of an odd-looking baby duck lured away from his mother. Follow Ugly’s wild adventure and the friends he makes until he reunites with his mother. Music by George Stiles. Book by Anthony Drewe.

Summer Youth Theatre invites you to the summer’s biggest party: A Midsummer Night’s Dream: Fantasy on the Dance Floor. Immerse yourself in an eccentric and glamorous theatrical party experience with music, food, dancing and surprises while Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream unfolds around you.

Cinderella, or How Pipsqueak the Mouse Became a Stallion

This take on the classic fairy tale features Pipsqueak the mouse and his buddy Moose as they spin a tale of dragons, witches, slapstick and a Prince Charming, who was almost Prince Dave. Everyone still gets to live happily ever after, but you’ll never look at “Cinderella” the same again. Written by SYT alumnus Will Averill.

The Prom, the Musical JUSTIN

You are invited to The Prom, a smash-hit musical about love, acceptance and embracing the person you were meant to be. Follow a troupe of hilarious, down-on-their-luck Broadway stars as they shake up a small Indiana town to rally behind a teen who wants to go to the prom with her girlfriend. Tony Award-nominated for Best Musical and winner of Best Musical Score. Music by Matthew Sklar. Lyrics by Chad Beguelin. Book by Bob Martin and Chad Beguelin.
