DAR ES SALAAM: City in the spotlight
As a megacity set on the dazzling Indian Ocean coastline, Dar es Salaam is a popular destination for both urban adventurers and beach lovers.
Tanzania’s commercial capital pulses with creative energy around the clock. It is the birthplace of influential music genres such as bongo flava and singeli, and the heart of the country’s fashion, food, and art scenes.
The city harbour serves as the launch point for ferry rides to the island paradise of Zanzibar, but Dar has its own vibrant beach culture, from the central party strip of Coco Beach to tranquil swimming spots tucked away north and south of the city.

Local transport
Bajaji
Three-wheeled bajaji, named after the Indian company that manufactures them, are a popular and affordable way to navigate Dar. Their compact size makes them ideal for weaving through the city’s often heavy traffic. Bargaining is expected, so be sure to agree on a price before the ride begins.
Dar Rapid Transit (DART)
Dar’s rapid transit bus system is still being rolled out in phases, but thanks to designated lanes and high-capacity buses, it already offers a faster, more comfortable commute.
Dala dalas
These minibuses are a common sight on Dar’s roads. Passenger numbers often far exceed the vehicle’s 12-seater capacity, while the conductor can be seen hanging from the side door to attract more customers and announce stops. Standards of cleanliness, roadworthiness, and safety vary, so choose your vehicle wisely. Fares are paid to the conductor, who will announce stops and tell you when to get off.
Taxis
Cabs are available for hire but are rarely metered, so be sure to negotiate the rate or fee upfront. Many cab drivers are happy to give you their mobile numbers so you can use them throughout your stay in their city. Taxi Drivers are often excellent sources for recommendations of where to eat, shop, and explore.
Ride-hailing apps such as Uber and Bolt are also popular in the city and generally more consistent in pricing and service.
