basketball. Both of those UConn squads are among the very best in the country. But the UConn women’s soccer team has held no official practice and no official words have been issued about the state of the sport in Storrs.

“We were supposed to report this week,” Steck said. “But that has been pushed back now.”

So Steck sits and waits. She wonders if there will ever be a senior season, filled with balloons and tributes galore, like most senior athletes enjoy.

Last week, Steck was busy working as a counselor at the Nutley High School summer soccer camp that was organized and run by Steck’s high school coach Mike DiPiano.

Steck said that it felt good to be on the field again and running around with the youngsters who admire her as being Nutley’s greatest female soccer player.

“I love it,” Steck said. “I love being back with the kids. They are the future of Nutley soccer. This is where I started. I want to give back to the community where I began. I was looking forward to coming here and working with the kids. I have a lot of fun doing it. I like seeing other girls being passionate about the sport.”

Steck said that she was a little disheartened about her chances to play this fall when the UConn football program announced that it had ceased operations for 2020 and will look to see if it is feasible for the Huskies to play football in the spring.

“It was tough hearing that,” Steck said. “I have a lot of friends on the football team. I think that has prepared us if they decide to end our season. The school said that they didn’t want to risk any football players getting it (COVID-19). I think it gives school officials a little time to figure out what they’re going to do next.” So basically, Steck sits and waits for the other shoe to drop.

“The hardest part is not knowing,” Steck said. “I know we all want to play a full season. We want to fight for

something. If we take a step back now, I know we would be willing to sacrifice to have a full season. So I think we’re all for playing in the spring if it means we’re playing a full season and we have something to play for. Further discussion has to happen.”

It’s all up in the air – the fall season, Steck’s senior year.

“It’s tough,” Steck said. “My whole life, I have been prepared to play. But this uncertainty, between my teammates and friends, is so ridiculous. We’re all in this together. It affects all of us.”

Steck honestly had no idea what the future holds.

“Will they officially pull the plug? I honestly don’t know,” Steck said. “I’m going to keep working and training like we still have something to fight for.”

Steck will continue to work towards her degrees. She hopes to become some sort of law enforcement officer, either as a police officer or perhaps the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

“Something along those lines,” Steck said.

The pandemic has even caused havoc in Steck’s educational plans. With one year left of eligibility, does she stick it out and wait for the Huskies to take the field again? Or does she transfer to a place that she most certainly will play next fall and move toward her final piece of education?

Just like everything else in college athletics, it’s all a big mystery. That’s certainly not what Zoe Steck signed up for nearly four years ago when she declared she was going to UConn.

THE THREE TYPES OF SPINA BIFIDA

Spina bifida, a birth defect that causes malformation of the spine and spinal cord, comes in different forms. “Spina bifida occulta” is the mildest form of the condition, resulting in only a small separation between one or more bones of the spine. “Meningocele” is a form in which the membranes that protect the spinal cord push through an opening in the vertebrae, forming a fluid-filled sac. “Open spina bifida,” or “myelomeningocele,” is the most severe form of the disease. In this case, the spinal cord is open in several places, and both the protective membrane and the spinal nerves push through one of them at birth, forming a sac and exposing the child to dangerous infections.

Not all people born with spina bifida have the same needs, so treatment will be different for each person. During pregnancy there are screening tests (prenatal tests) to check for spina bifida and other birth defects. Talk with your doctor about any questions or concerns you have about this prenatal testing. To schedule a wellness exam, please call PREMIER CARE ASSOCIATES OF WEST HUDSON at 201-998-7474, or visit us 7 days a week at 512 Kearny Ave., Suite B. We can see patients on a walk-in basis.

P.S. Spina bifida can cause a multitude of complications including bowel and bladder problems, accumulation of fluid in the brain, mobility issues, and a variety of infections.

W.H.A.T. returning with virtual performance

By Kevin Canessa kc@theobserver.com

Live theater is back in West Hudson, albeit in a very new format.

The West Hudson Arts & Theater Company, in association with the Women’s Clubs of Arlington, present “The Right is Ours!,” an original virtual theater experience written by local playwright and W.H.A.T. board member Allyssa Hynes. The production, which celebrates the centennial of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, giving women the right to vote, will premiere in a live stream on the W.H.A.T. Facebook page Wednesday, Aug. 26 at 7:30 p.m.

The idea for the production, which will serve as a fundraiser for the allvolunteer community theater, was brought to W.H.A.T. by Juniorettes adviser and W.H.A.T. board member Brandi-Leigh Miller.

“My friend Regina Conlon Vinacco, a local college history professor, Harrison resident and legacy member of the JWCA, and I were having a conversation about how her grandmother may have been the first woman in her family to vote,” Miller said.

The two discussed the possibility of creating a joint club service project to deliver a program of historical speeches for a “Woman’s Suffragethemed tea.”

W.H.A.T. President Jerry Ficeto agreed it would be the good fit for the community theater company and a great way to help raise much-needed funds.

“Since W.H.A.T. has been dark since March due to COVID-19, a virtual production was the perfect solution to bring theater back to our community and offer a fundraising vehicle for the theater, while also providing a chance for our women’s clubs to commemorate this milestone,” Ficeto said. Hynes volunteered to weave historical research done by Vinacco into historically relevant scenes and conversations and excerpts from famous speeches turned into monologues. In the production, the telling of the road to ratification of the 19th Amendment is all seen through the eyes of a woman of the time — an unnamed suffragette — who marks the passage of events by plucking the petals of a yellow rose, a symbol of the Suffrage Movement. The title, “The Right Is Ours!,” is actually a line taken from a speech by suffragist Elizabeth Cady Stanton at the Women’s Right’s Convention in 1848.

Miller visited site where the speech was delivered a few years ago.

“It was a powerful moment that was overshadowed by learning that the very women the convention had been held in support of, were relegated to sitting in the balconies in the back of the room,” Miller said.

She says she thought about how disappointing that must have been for these women who were stepping forward, subjecting themselves to violence and anger.

“Women and so many facets of our society are still fighting for equal rights and recognition under existing laws that should already protect and empower them ... we had to tell this story,” Miller said. The virtual production is being filmed and edited by W.H.A.T. board member and technical director Brooke Gorsica, who is also working with historical images and footage from the public domain.

Donations may be made through Venmo @WHATCONJ. Checks may be mailed to W.H.A.T., P.O. Box 241, Kearny N.J. 07032.
