Life-long resident of Grayson County, Jerod Brockelman, and the Lonestar Bandits are preparing for a matchup with the Massachusetts Maulers in the first ever National Championship of the Kayak Fishing League (KFL). The team has traveled to Lake Chickamauga in Tennessee for pre-fishing in anticipation of the game on Saturday, Sept. 18, 2021. The Lonestar Bandits achieved the only undefeated season in the league, earned homefield advantage for the southern conference matchup, and set a record of “ten best fish of the day” that totaled 216.5 inches on Fairfield Lake in Texas. The KFL has stated that Bandit’s history-setting record will be nearly impossible to beat in future years.

The foundation was laid in 2020 or the KFL with the aim of taking an individual sport and transitioning to a team event. Seventeen teams were formed, nine in the southern states and eight in the north. The schedule was set for 2021 with pre-season, regular season games and the north/south conference playoffs. Based on numerous social media platforms, it’s estimated that the 2021 season had over one million views, with the conference playoffs attracting 60,000 followers. An All-Star game is scheduled for October, and the 2022 season is in full planning mode as new teams are forming across the country.
