THE BEATLES: FROM LIVERPOOL TO ABBEY ROAD

This will be the 3rd of 3 semesters of the ultimate nostalgia class, combining movie and music nostalgia from the mid-80’s to the end of the 90’s. We’ll learn about the history and business of film music and the process of creating a film score and soundtrack. We will see how the music enhances the images, how the images enhance the music and what happens to several of the most famous scenes in film history when you watch them without the accompanying music. You need not have taken Part 1 or 2 to enjoy Part 3.

Renoir was one of the greatest French Impressionist. He developed a new style of expressing the beauty of the human figure. A powerful friend of his challenged the Impressionists to produce a large significant painting. He took this challenge and produced the ‘Luncheon of the Boating Party’. We will discuss this painting in detail, along with the artistic background he developed in, his life, and his other paintings.

This lecture will follow in the footsteps of The Beatles as they embark on their historic journey starting from their early days as a cover band in Liverpool and Hamburg, into the excitement of Beatlemania, including concert performances, TV, and films, through their creative ground breaking studio albums (Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band) to the formation of Apple Records and finally to their remarkable final recordings at Abbey Road Studios. Coming full circle, we will explore the highlights of each individual’s “solo” post Beatles work.

ASTRONOMY - PART ONE JOSEPH AIBINDER

The course begins with the basic science of astronomy and evolution of telescopes to the discovery of the big bang creation of the universe, the development and life cycle of the stars and sun, to their death in supernovas and their remnants as white dwarfs, neutron stars, pulsars and black holes. The course is highly visual with the use of images from the great ground based and space based telescopes and videos/simulations from NASA, ESA and leading universities. New space programs like Artemis that will be bringing humanity to the moon and Mars will also be explored.
