For me, the best part of the TV series, Touched by An Angel, is the episode when the angel is telling the main character in the story “God loves you.” I do not think we are reminded often enough of God’s love for us, especially when we are going through an extremely difficult time or reflecting on a failure in life. The great news is that, unlike our culture, where we feel we are only “loved” for our performance, God is Love (1 John 4:8) and His Love for us is unconditional. Think of a mother’s love for her child, which is always present despite any negative circumstances in the child’s life.
Romans 8:38-39 tells us, “And I am convinced that nothing can ever
separate us from God’s Love.” And just in case you were not convinced, God’s Word gives us an extensive list of how He loves us in the verses that follow.
God loves you! Let that settle in your heart. God loves you! Repeat it over and over again in your head! Look in the mirror and tell yourself, “God loves me!” Then, just for added effect, say, “God loves ME!” Now, say it like you mean it. It’s not silly. Wow, how does it feel? What you are doing is speaking the truth of
God’s Word (John 3:16).
I truly believe that if we only realized how much God loves us, we could love others better. Remember that His greatest commandment for us as believers is to LOVE.
In Matthew 22:37-39, “Jesus tells us, ‘You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”
We are to be God’s witnesses to this world by the love we show to one another. As a favorite hymn says, “They will know we are Christians by our love.” Remember the verses in 1 John 4:7-8: “Dear friends, let us continue to love one another, for love comes from God. Anyone who loves is a child of God and knows God. But anyone who does not love does not know God, for God is love.” How will I really know if I am walking in God’s love? Well, my behavior should mirror 1 Corinthians Chapter 13. “Love is patient and kind… it keeps no record of being wronged. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.”
Yes, “Three things will last forever—faith, hope, and love—and the greatest of these is LOVE” (1 Corinthians 13:13).
