Why Is God’s Will So Important?

God has an ultimate plan for each of His children. His plan involves a life well lived that brings honor and glory to Him. His plan involves growth in us and a heart so big and full of Him that when we step outside His will, we know how to find our way back. Wouldn’t it be safe to say that every believer has stepped outside the will of God many times? Sure! But isn’t it wonderful that we can never step outside of God’s marvelous grace? It’s that grace that grips onto us to guide us back into God’s perfect will. Oooooh, doesn’t that make you wanna shout? It excites me to the core!
Grace is a sweet and undeserving gift, but let’s talk about why God’s will is important. I personally know from the times I’ve stepped outside of God’s will what it’s done to me spiritually. It’s agonizing. Yet there I go, doing things my way, convincing myself I deserve to live life for me. I’m a grownup, after all. But am I? I mean, my rebellion is quite childish. None of ME without HIM brings Him honor and glory! NONE! When this is revealed in me, I am like David shouting out to God, “Teach me to do Your will, for You are my God; let Your good Spirit lead me on level ground” (Psalm 143:10).
Oh, the sweet living presence of the Holy Spirit that resides in me fights for me to get this right! He tugs and He pulls me back to the center of God’s will. Then my sweet Savior Jesus stands before our glorious God and says, “My blood covered this for her. She is forgiven and is back on course.” Then my big ole Father God kisses me with grace, PLANTING my feet back on that “level ground.” I tell ya, when your feet are on sinful, shaky ground, life gets equally unbalanced and you begin to feel the shame of that sin, which can either drive you further from the cross or faster to the cross. If you’re a TRUE believer, I believe it’s faster. Conviction has a way of bringing us back to the cross, and that conviction comes from the Holy Spirit’s tug and pull I mentioned earlier. This is why God gave us a Helper! Without Him, we’d all be wandering around aimlessly, racking our brains on how to do and stay in God’s will. I gladly accept God’s gift of the Spirit to me to keep my feet on “level ground.” The Bible tells us also, “For it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure” (Philippians 2:13). What child doesn’t long to please their parent? There’s joy in that, ya know! I get more joy in the center of God’s will than I do chasing my tail in my own rat race. I’ll leave it right here on a personal level for me and hope you too understand these words and have a heart to stay in God’s will. It’s the most life-giving place to be!
“I delight to do Your will, O my God; Your law is within my heart” (Psalm 40:8).
