The American Cancer Society’s 2021 Real Men Wear Pink campaign for North Alabama kicked off in September. Now in its sixth year, Real Men Wear Pink is a unique fundraiser in which local civic and business leaders raise awareness and money throughout September and October to fight breast cancer. Each Real Men Wear Pink participant accepts a fundraising challenge and will compete to be the top fundraiser among his peers by the end of the campaign. “I’m honored to chair North Alabama’s Real Men Wear Pink campaign working towards a future filled with greater awareness and medical advancements in the fight against breast cancer,” said Molly Bell, General Manager for Parkway Place Mall and this year’s Real Men Wear Pink Chair. “It’s truly amazing to see our local leaders unite in pink with the American Cancer Society to raise funds to support medical services and cancer research! Everyone involved in Real Men Wear Pink, from our men to those who donate, is a local hero honoring those we know and love who have fought this cancer. We all wear pink for a brighter future!” In 2020, female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most diagnosed cancer worldwide. An estimated 281,550 women and 2,650 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2021. The American Cancer Society is currently investing $76 million in breast cancer-specific research through 174 grants. To date, more than $56 million has been invested in metastatic breast cancer research. In addition, the Society’s commitment to health equity includes a $48.6 million investment in research to help understand cancer inequalities and create strategies for overcoming them.
