Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation will offer programs to the community. Unless otherwise noted, there is a per-person fee, and activities will take place at the Environmental Center in Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature’s Way, Lancaster. Additionally, registration and payment are required by noon on the business day before the event unless otherwise stated. To register, call 717-295-2055 or visit www.lancastercounty parks.org and click on Online Program Registration. Snowflake Discovery! will be held from 11 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Feb. 19, for children ages 8 to 12. A naturalist will share how snowflakes form and how to make some. Weather permitting, participants will attempt to get an up-close look at how unique these little crystals are. February Phenology will take place from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 20, and is open to anyone age 10 and older. Phenology is the study of seasonal natural events like flowers blooming in spring and leaves falling in autumn. Participants will learn why the Earth has seasons and what to look forward to as winter thaws into spring. After the presentation, participants will hike to look for examples of these seasonal changes in the local area. They should dress for the weather. Parents may drop off children but must sign a release waiver. Munchkin Science: Volcanoes will be offered on Tuesday, Feb. 22, from 1 to 2 p.m. Children ages 3 to 5 will learn about volcanoes, lava, and why volcanoes erupt. Participants will make their own playdough, build a volcano, and make it erupt. Children should dress for messy fun. TNT Science: Rocks, Minerals, Volcanoes will run from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on Feb. 22. Youths ages 11 to 17 will study the properties of a variety of minerals by performing hands-on tests while armed with a nail, a magnifying glass, and vinegar. The program will focus on identifying basic rock types, the source of volcanoes, their location, and how they erupt, and it will culminate in a volcano-building activity. Parents must sign a release waiver before dropping off their children.
Maple Sugaring for Seniors, an outdoor program, will take place for adults age 18 and older on Wednesday, Feb. 23, from 11 a.m. to noon at Pavilion 11, 733 Williamson Road, Lancaster. Participants will be guided through the sugaring process with the identification of sugar maple trees, tree tapping, sap harvesting, and the extraction of water to produce maple syrup. Participants should wear sturdy footwear and dress for the weather. Jump Into STEM: Shapes in Nature, for 3- to 5-year-olds, will take place from 10 to 11 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 24. Preschool scientists will take a hike to identify shapes in nature. They should dress appropriately for the weather and wear hiking shoes.
