Mount Joy Rd. Between 283 & Mount Joy M J Rd B 8 & M J and participants may sign up for a duck to enter in the race on the day of the event.

At 5 p.m., hundreds of rubber ducks will be dropped into the Conestoga River, beginning the traditional race and highlight of the festival. Competing owners of the fast and furious waterfowl will be eligible to win prizes; several different packages are available to sponsor a duck for entry in the race. Additionally, multiple sponsorships are available to businesses looking to support the event and advertise. Those who purchase packages of racing ducks will receive souvenir ducks that they may take home.

The event is one of the largest community fundraising events in the county, with all proceeds benefiting the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development. The organization supports nearly 4,000 young people with physical therapy, speech therapy and behavioral health services from birth to age 21. “We evaluate children when they come in and see what they need,” said Tara Zilling, director of community fundraising for Schreiber. “Our goal isn’t only to make sure the kids can thrive, but that their families can as well.” Children diagnosed with autism, attention deficit and anxiety disorders and trauma receive care through sessions with therapists who work with them both oneon-one and in conjunction with their entire family.

Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development also offers several camps and programs, as well as child care through the Circle of Friends Academy. The Circle of Friends Academy provides an environment for the development of children between the ages of six weeks and 5 years, through education that is both social and emotional. Beginning with the infant room, the facility focuses on children’s motor skills and sense development. Once in the toddler room, kids are introduced to a schooling environment and are provided opportunities to cultivate their social skills. Finally, staff in the pre-kindergarten room aid those enrolled with problem solving and encourage them to build peer relationships in preparation for kindergarten.

For more information or to become a sponsor, contact Zilling at tzilling@schreiberpediatric.org. To purchase a duck to enter the race, visit www.schreiberpediatric.org.

The Duck Drop will occur at 5 p.m.

NOW HIRING! YMCA Receives Program Grant

The Parkinson’s Foundation recently announced the recipients of more than $2 million in community grants for Parkinson’s disease (PD) programs across the U.S. The foundation invests in community programs that make an impact in local communities and help people live better with PD by providing support for unmet health, wellness, and educational needs.

The YMCA of the Roses was awarded $18,000 for its Partners in Progress initiative, which will bring accessible and affordable wellness classes to individuals with PD in the local community through activities including boxing, cycling, and water-based exercises. The 2022 grant cycle focuses on programs that educate and deliver exercise specifically designed for people with PD, reach those who are newly diagnosed, and address the intersection of mental health and PD.

To see the full list of the 2022 community grant recipients, visit www.parkinson.org /2022grants.

Fun and learning will go hand in hand when Chiques PreK opens at Chiques United Methodist Church, 1215 E. Main St., Mount Joy. The private school will operate Mondays through Fridays yearround and will offer classes for children ages 3 to 5.

Cindy Beyerlein, acting director, said the school is a natural fit for the church because it will further the church’s mission of community interaction. “We were looking for opportunities to expand into the community,” she stated. “We wanted to increase our outreach and find new ways to connect with the community.”

Plans began for the preschool in January, and Emmy Brenner was hired as the lead teacher. She’ll be joined in the classroom by assistant teacher Kathleen Geigley, along with church volunteers. Beyerlein noted that the teacher-to-student ratio will be 1 to 10.

Brenner brings with her more than 15 years of experience as a preschool teacher, including working at Head Start. She describes the Chiques PreK curriculum as academic-focused, with an emphasis on creativity.

“We’ll have circle time with songs, stories and Spanish immersion. We’ll have lots of opportunities for students to burn off their excess energy with gross motor play both inside and outside. We’ll also be incorporating rest time into the day,” Brenner remarked, noting that students will bring their own lunches. Daily lessons in reading, math and science will be offered, along with smallgroup instruction and opportunities for tactile activities, imaginative play and more at various learning centers. There will also be a focus on social-emotional development of students, Brenner said.

Students will also take field trips and will be treated to guest speakers and readers from the community. “I’m hoping to bring in someone from the police department as well as other community groups,” Brenner noted.

Welcoming students to the new Chiques PreK are (from left) Emmy Brenner, pastor Michael Byrd and Cindy Beyerlein.
