WHAT TO DO FOR WILD ANIMALS, INJURED ANIMALS, ANIMAL CRUELTY

M

ost people don’t realize this, but Scottsdale Police Dispatchers receive all sorts of calls from citizens wondering what to do regarding wild animals, injured animals, animal cruelty and more. Here’s what to do when you encounter these different creatures… WILD ANIMALS: Coyotes, javelina, bobcats and more all are native to the Arizona desert. Sightings of these animals are actually quite frequent. Our best advice is to LEAVE THEM ALONE. You’ll see them crossing streets, walking through parking lots and of course, hiking our trails and parks. Unless the animal is actively attacking, officers will not respond. SNAKES: If you find a snake in your house or garage, the Scottsdale Fire Department will remove them for you. Call the Fire Department’s non-emergency line at 480312-8911. How about in your yard? There are volunteer organizations that can relocate them

for you. The Fire Department has additional information along with tips on how to keep snakes away from your home online at: https://www.scottsdaleaz.gov/fire/snakes-andbees LOST OR FOUND PETS: Our dispatchers will log it in at our call center. The Maricopa County Animal Care and Control (MCACC) also has tools and suggestions online at: www.maricopa.gov/3560/Animal-Care-andControl INJURED DOGS OR CATS: Visit the Arizona Humane Society online or call them at 602-997-7585. ANIMAL CRUELTY: If there is a dire situation in which the animal needs emergency assistance (i.e. locked in a car or being beaten), police officers will respond to evaluate the situation. To report suspected abuse, you can use the Arizona Humane Society’s online reporting form or call 602-997-7585 ext. 2073.
