However, by asking the right questions, you can narrow your search to locate a reputable shop staffed by experienced, certified professionals. The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) was founded in 1972 as an independent, non-profit organization working to improve the quality of vehicle repair and service by testing and certifying automotive professionals. TECH CERTIFICATION In addition to passing an ASE Certification test, automotive technicians must have two years of on the job training or one year of on the job training and a two-year degree in automotive repair to qualify for certification. To remain ASE certified, professionals must retest every five years to keep up with ever-advancing automotive technology. In addition to qualified technicians, it’s important to select a repair facility that offers a warranty on the parts and service, said Mark Belden, owner of Brady’s Auto Repair in Boerne. replacing starters, alternators and radiators,” Belden said. “That’s the standard.” Belden said it’s important the warranty is honored outside the immediate area so the repair is covered while traveling, noting that nation-wide repair networks exist should the need arise. OTHER CONSIDERATIONS “Do your due diligence. It’s also important to consider the length of time an auto repair business has been in operation,” Belden said, adding that it’s also good to check a few different ratings services, like the Better Business Bureau.
