"H e was graduated from iVfSM with a B.S. in M etallurg<ca l Enginee rin g and w'as fi ;" st employed by th e B eth lehem Steer Company in 1929. From 1933 to 1937 h was engaged in experimental and devel opment work for the s teel co mpa ny a nd was promoted to hi s prese nt pos ition in 1937. Whi le attending MSM he was a member of the Trian gle fraternity and Tau B eta Pi.

Jackling's Views on the· Copper Situation " The potentia li ties of the copper producin g indus try in thi s c ountry promi s in g an adequate s upply of th e metal for genera tions are just as g reat today as they we re wh en th e economic treatment of low grade sulphide ores was devised and initiated at the U tah Copper Company's properti es in Bin gham canyo n about 42 years ago" writes D. Jacklin g '92, whose fame and ackno wledged leaders hip in that indus try s tem from his own pioneer recog nition of the economic potentialiti es of the Bing ham canyon and s imil ar low g rade copper depos its. Co nvalescence from a sev.e re illness has prevented Mr. Jacklin g from prepa rin g a forma l a rticle on the coppe r s ituation, but he has g racious ly authorized extensive quotation s from recent co rres pondence o n the s ubj ect with Alumni Pres ident Schneeberger. 1vIr. Jacklin g's s ta tement is based on th e assumption that th e relation s hip between th e market price for the metal and th e cost of producin g it be th e same today as it was at that time, that, ". . that the users of copper metal are willin g to pay for it th e cost of production and a littl e more as an incen tive to min e a nd benefic iate avai labl e resources." Un- fortunately this has not been th e v iew of those "self-seekin g advocates of F ederal co ntrol of everyt hi ng" who seek to perpetrate s uc h control. H e points out" .... the costs of service and suppli es of all kinds have increased 100% or more, mos twise in the las t 15 yea rs ; a nd on ly for th e technolog ical imp rovements in methods and apparatus achi eved by the copper minin g industry itself throu g hout th e firs t 30 yea rs of this century, practicall y no coppe r at all could have been produced at a profit in thi s country to serve th e war needs durin g th e past five yea rs at th e arbitraril y imposed a nd confi scatory cei lin g prices fo r metal that have been in e ffect SiJ1 Ce th e begin nin g of the war and even before." S. a nd Ph. D. fro m I owa State. Dr. i\IcCracken wo rked at I owa State as a res earch fe llow until 1939 when he firs t entered th e Detrex o rganization. H e is a member of the f\merican C hemi cal Society and th e American Society of Oil Chemists.

Dr. Mc Cracken's new duties , acco rdin g to A. O. Th alacker, vice pres ident and general manage r, will prov ide both admini s trative and technical assistance to iVfr. Dinley in research a nd product de,-elopment in all of th e compan y's three major divis ion s : indus trial metal cleaning, dry cleanin g, an d oi l-extraction. -

W illiam F. McConnell '42 Now in Texas

VVilliam F. McConnell is now with the Dictograph P roducts Inc. Hi s job is primaril y sales bu t h e also does the es timatin g for in stall ation s and supervises insta ll ations of equipment and is ac tin g as bran ch manager for the Dallas branc h of the Compan y. H e writes, "feel that thi s job offers exceptionally fin e opportunities if ha ndl ed ri g ht. I got the j ob throug h th e officer under whom I served in the army and reel quite fortunate in ha\· in g had the opportuni ty as it is the type of work I most enjoy and is much less confinin g and less subj ect to s upervisio n than was my pre\· ious j o b.
