Often called “UNC” or “Carolina,” the cornerstone to the nation’s first state university building, Old East, was laid on October 12, 1793. UNC opened its doors for students in 1795 making it the only public university in the U.S. that awarded degrees to students in the 18th century.
Committed to making its high-quality education accessible and affordable, UNC-Chapel Hill has placed fourth among national public universities according to U.S. News & World Report’s 2024 “Best Colleges” rankings. UNC has landed in the top five for 23 straight years.
