Transformed by a Return to the Church
andra and Juan Pablo Ruelas had been away from their Catholic faith for years when the Lord called them home to the Church through a truly special source — the couple’s children. Reflecting on the incredible blessings that their return to the faith has brought to her marriage and family life, Sandra feels an incredible sense of gratitude. Sandra has been a member of St. Isidore since she was nine years old and her parents moved their family back to California from Mexico. As a young adult, she found herself drifting away from the faith. At 19, she married Juan Pablo in a civil ceremony. Juan Pablo had a negative experience with the Church as a child, and between his reluctance to return to Mass and Sandra’s busy work schedule in retail sales, church attendance was not a priority for the couple. All of that changed, however, when their oldest child began
attending St. Isidore School. When problems arose in the public middle school that Juan Pablo, Jr., was attending, Sandra and Juan Pablo decided to enroll him in our parish school. It only made sense, then, that his younger sister, Paulina, would join him there. Soon, the children were learning about the Church and the sacraments, and asking questions about the faith at home. “The children did First Communion [with the school] and started asking why Juan Pablo and I weren’t taking Communion,” Sandra says. “So we started going to church more and slowly getting involved. It was baby steps — it didn’t happen overnight.” As the family began to explore their faith, a heartbreaking experience ended up bringing Sandra to an even closer relationship with the Lord. continued on page 10

Transformada por su Regreso a la Iglesia

andra y Juan Pablo Ruelas habían estado alejados de su fe Católica durante años cuando el Señor los llamó de regreso a casa a través de una fuente verdaderamente especial: los hijos de la pareja. Al reflexionar sobre las increíbles bendiciones que su regreso a la fe le ha traído a su matrimonio y vida familiar, Sandra siente un increíble sentido de gratitud. Sandra ha sido miembra de San Isidro desde que tenía nueve años y sus padres mudaron a su familia a California desde México. Cuando era una joven adulta, se encontró alejándose de la fe. A los 19 se casó con Juan Pablo en una ceremonia civil. Juan Pablo había tenido una experiencia negativa con la Iglesia cuando era niño, y entre su renuencia a regresar a Misa y la apretada agenda de trabajo de Sandra en las ventas minoristas, la asistencia a la iglesia no era una prioridad para la pareja. Sin embargo, todo eso cambió cuando su hijo mayor comenzó a asistir a la escuela de San Isidro. Cuando surgieron problemas en la escuela secundaria
pública a la que asistía Juan Pablo Jr., Sandra y Juan Pablo decidieron inscribirlo en nuestra escuela parroquial. Entonces, tenía sentido que su hermana menor, Paulina, se uniera a él allí. Pronto, los niños estaban aprendiendo sobre la Iglesia y los sacramentos, y hacían preguntas sobre su fe en casa. “Los niños hicieron la Primera Comunión [con la escuela] y empezaron a preguntar por qué Juan Pablo y yo no estábamos recibiendo la Comunión,” dice Sandra. “Así que empezamos a ir a la iglesia más y a involucrarnos poco a poco. Fueron pequeños pasos, no sucedió de la noche a la mañana.” Cuando la familia comenzó a explorar su fe, una experiencia desgarradora terminó por llevar a Sandra a una relación aún más estrecha con el Señor. “Tuvimos nuestra tercera hija, Valeria, en 2014,” dice Sandra. “Luego, en 2015, volví a quedar embarazada. No estaba planeado, pero estábamos muy felices. Luego fui a la primera cita con el médico y el bebé no tenía latidos. continúa en la página 10 9
