n 1992, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops approved a pastoral letter titled Stewardship: A Disciple’s Response. This document was an invitation to follow Christ Who gave of Himself for us. Each of us is called to serve our neighbors and to be stewards of God’s creation and of all that has been entrusted to us. However, to truly understand stewardship, we must look to the Holy Eucharist. The Holy Eucharist is the total gift of our loving Savior to us. Stewardship is our response to that gift. Even the word “Eucharist” implies stewardship. The word “Eucharist” finds its roots in the Latin word eucharistia, which in turn came from the Greek word eukaristos, which meant, quite simply, “gratitude” or “thanksgiving.” How fitting that we, who are called to be a stewardship people, celebrate at the focal point of every Mass an act of thanksgiving and gratitude — namely, the reception of Jesus’ gift to us — the Eucharist. In their pastoral letter on stewardship, the bishops speak of the Eucharist in this way: “The Eucharist continued on page 10

n 1992, la Conferencia de Obispos Católicos de los Estados Unidos aprobó una carta pastoral titulada La Corresponsabilidad: Respuesta de los Discípulos. Este documento fue una invitación a seguir a Cristo que se entregó por nosotros. Cada uno de nosotros está llamado a servir a nuestro prójimo y a ser mayordomos de la creación de Dios y de todo lo que se nos ha confiado. Sin embargo, para comprender verdaderamente la entrega, debemos mirar a la Sagrada Eucaristía. La Sagrada Eucaristía es el regalo total de nuestro amoroso Salvador para nosotros. La entrega es nuestra respuesta a ese don. Incluso la palabra “Eucaristía” implica entrega. La palabra “Eucaristía” tiene sus raíces en la palabra latina eucharistia, que a su vez proviene de la palabra griega eukaristos, que significaba, simplemente, “gratitud” o “acción de gracias”. Qué apropiado que nosotros, que estamos llamados a ser un pueblo de entrega, celebremos en el punto central de cada Misa un acto de acción de gracias y gratitud, es decir, la recepción del regalo de Jesús para nosotros: la Eucaristía. En su carta pastoral sobre la entrega, los obispos hablan de la Eucaristía de esta manera: “La Eucaristía continúa en la página 10
