very now again, our daily Mass goers here at St. Isidore notice that there is a new — yet familiar — face in their midst. And if they think it is a trick of their imagination that they feel they’ve seen this visitor many times before, it isn’t! This smiling and joyful woman is Shannon Walsh, a missionary who spends most of her stateside time between trips to China right here in our parish. With 20 years of experience in the nomadic lifestyle that comes with her missionary work, Shannon is thankful to have our welcoming and faithful parish serve as her “home base” in the States. When Shannon first began praying for China during her college years, she had no real intention of traveling there. However, there were four intentions for China on her heart that made their way into her daily prayers — one for orphans, one for the women forced to have abortions, one for those who had never heard of Jesus Christ, and another for the Catholic Church in general. Following her graduation from Franciscan University, Shannon did some mission work in Mexico while her prayers for China continued. Finally, one day she prayed for the opportunity to help orphans there. Just 10 minutes later, the phone rang and she was asked to travel to an orphanage in China! “I went over to volunteer with orphans for six months and never would have imagined that I would still be doing this 20 years later,” Shannon says. “The Lord has opened up doors for me to immerse myself with all the people I was praying for in my four intentions. Now, it’s focused on working with the Church and the young adults, helping them with their faith and diving deeper into being a disciple of Christ, what that looks like, and how to live that out.” For Shannon, a large part of the desire to bring

Shannon Walsh at the Great Wall of China others closer to Christ goes back to a life-changing experience she had on a TEC — Teens Encounter Christ — retreat. “When I was 17, my mom forced me to go on a diocesan retreat,” she says. “I went kicking and screaming, not even sure that God was real, and questioning what the point of even going to Mass was. I came out three days later totally convinced that God was real and that He loved me, and that changed everything. I started going to daily Mass and I started praying the Rosary. All I wanted was to learn more about God, why He loves me, and if His love is so strong, how can I give back, how can I love Him back. From there, I went to Franciscan University and studied theology.” Having witnessed firsthand the immense grace that comes with knowing Christ’s love — as she first experienced it on that retreat, and then living in a continued on page 8
