Disasters Hit Fibreboard Plants
Louisiana-Pacific's Fibreboard Corp. suffered two disasters three weeks apart when a recovery boiler explosion at its Antioch, Ca., plant killed three men and a fire broke out at its Standard. Ca.. unit.
The July 5 explosion at Antioch instantly killed the leadmen in the department, Myles Harper and John Manry. Supervisor Art Thompson suffered chemical and steam burns over approximately 750/o of his body and died more than two weeks later, according to George Sisterhenm, Fibreboard spokesman.
Extensive damage including the loosening of gas lines shut down the boiler and plant for about a week, said Sisterhenm. Such recovery boiler systems process chemicals which digest wood, producing smelt as a by-product. If smelt comes in contact with water (as he said happened in this case), there is a very rapid expansion, similar to an explosion.
"Reportedly an alarm went off," said Sisterhenm, "but, for whatever reason, these three extremely experienced men did not take cover."
The July 27 fire in Standard "made a shambles out of the control room," and it is believed to have been started by an outside contractor who was cutting and welding near a shutdown boiler, said Sisterhenm.
Production at the sawmill was unaffected, while the plywood plant and dry kiln were to be down an estimated four days, said Sisterhenm.
