High Profit Telephone Products
With sales of do-it-yourself telephone wiring and accessories increasing from $200 to $300 million, many owners of hardware stores and home centers are wondering how they can cash in on this high-profit aftermarket.
According to Scott Mathews of AT&T Modular Products, the best way to sell telephone wiring and accessories is to get the product into the consumer's hands. Everything on display should be visible, easily identifiable, and within the reach of the browsing customer.
"Most people are naturally afraid of wiring," says Mathews. "Only when the potential buyer picks up the product and reads the label will these feelings of fear fade. The buyer will realize that the product is safe, easy-toinstall, and legal."
According to Mathews, products sell best if displayed on racks in the center ofthe floor, near cash registers, or down aisles where there is a lot of traffic. It is also important, he says, that packages be attractive, racks be eye-catching, and that there be some kind of helpful literature at point of purchase.
"The Iargest percentage of sales will be on impulse," says Mathews. "Customers shouldn't have to ask for the product or have the product explained by a salesperson. The product should be out on the floor where the customer will see it, examine it, and buy it."
Mathews says that most d-i-y telephone products offer 50 to 6O9o profit margins. If the racks are kept stocked and visible, he says, retailers €n expect the products to sell out eight to l0 times a year.
The products which are selling the fastest in the overall market, Mathews says, are the telephone handset cords, modular connecting blocks, adapters, and converters. In addition, accessory products are selling well.

(Continued from page 27) the Subcontractors Association on a rewriting of lien laws. They also co-chaired with numerous other associations a meeting conceming the parish central sales tax collection. They are working to eliminate unnecessary paper work by cutting the number of local sales tax collectors.
The concept would eliminate paper work for those doing business in a multi-pzrish area and eliminate approximately 150 local taxing jurisdictions now in existence, according to LBMDA.
Representatives from LBMDA and the Oil Field Contractors Association hosted a meeting with members of numerous Louisiana associations, state representative Buddy Leach and the Louisiana House of Representatives Ways and Means Committee. LBMDA considers the meeting's outcome positive and productive. The Louisiana Association of Business and Industry has given the tax proposal a high priority for both their small business and taxation committees.
Because objections of the Louisiana Municipal Association, parish school boards, police juries and local politicians must be overcome, LBMDA is urging its members to actively support the parish central sales tax collection conceDt.
