Oh my, oh my, inflation, high gas prices, food prices rising all the time, interest rates soaring, and the stock market on a roller coaster ride, what are we seniors on fixed incomes to do? Senior citizens, just like any age, still want to have fun, but what will fit in our budget this summer? Grab your lawn chair, sometimes a blanket on the ground is not comfortable, your favorite beverage, and head out to explore this summer. Thank goodness for free events in Oklahoma City and surrounding areas that are groovy! Check out our groovy list for a few suggestions of senior-friendly free happenings.

Arcadia Farmer’s Market: Located 5 miles East of Edmond, OK, on Rte. 66 Visit the Arcadia Farmer’s Market for a fun family outing this summer. The First Southern Baptist Church of Arcadia provides free balloons for the kids and water for your pet. A free petting zoo lets you get up close and personal with the animals. You support local vendors if you choose to purchase something, but no purchases are necessary. All the products at this market are local Oklahoma items. New items are available each week. Another priceless moment you can’t buy with money may happen at the swing set. Kids put down their phones and iPad and fly high on the swings while squealing, “Higher, higher, grandpa.” Heard on Hurd: Downtown Edmond S. Broadway between 1st and Hurd This event is on the 3rd Saturday of each month from March to October. The event goes from six to ten p.m. Besides being free, it is family and dog-friendly, entertainment by musicians, and a monthly non-profit is featured. 20

Scissortail Park: 300 SW 7th St, Oklahoma City, OK 73109 Scissortail Park stays groovy all summer long. Here is just a sample of some free events you can go to this summer. Every Saturday from April to October, they have a Farmers Market. You can join a free walking club, pets on leashes welcome, every Thursday at nine a.m. The park has a superb free concert series from May to September. To find out which concerts you want to attend, check out the Scissortail Park Concerts 2022 website. They even have big-name stars like LeAnn Rimes performing for free. Freedom Fest: Chisholm Trail Park, Yukon, Oklahoma. This summer, strut your American pride by attending the patriotic tribute to the U.S. Armed Forces. Freedom Fest is Yukon’s two-day celebration on July 3 and July 4. Admission is free. You can enjoy free live outdoor concerts and a whopping big firework show both nights that start at 10 pm. Wear your red, white, and blue, and show that it is groovy to be a proud American.
