The Power of the Arts FROM ARTS SOUTH DAKOTA AND THE SOUTH DAKOTA ARTS COUNCIL
South Dakota’s youth benefit from arts education in many ways. In fact, we’re now learning that the arts and sciences are entwined. Exposure to music, literature and the visual arts helps students succeed in mathematics, sciences and even athletics. “Support and advocacy for arts education must start at the local level,” says Arts South Dakota Executive Director Jim Speirs. Let your local school board know that you appreciate their support of arts programs. And be sure to attend and applaud the arts programs in your community.
ART & MUSIC INSTITUTES Arts education takes center stage every summer in Aberdeen when Arts South Dakota, the South Dakota Arts Council and Northern State University hosts the Art and Music Institutes. The 2023 dates are July 17-20. Educators from other states are welcome!
The Band Director Institute
The Choral Director Institute is an extensive and focused program designed to introduce choral music educators to the best in current and standard literature in addition to teaching methods and materials. The headline clinician will be Chris Maunu – conductor, educator, and composer based in the Denver-Metro area and a 4-time Finalist for GRAMMY® Music Educator of the Year.
The Arts Education Institute offers an educational and fun-filled week of hands-on learning to infuse the arts into classrooms and curriculum development. You do not need to be an educator to attend. Everyone is welcome. All workshops are offered for three graduate or continuing ed credits for teacher recertification.
