King’s Theory of Goal Attainment
Discussion Question 1: Post a summary of the article that you located and explain how the theory or model that you selected was used in the research study. Assess the value of basing research on an established theory or model.
Researchers use conceptual frameworks and models to generate explanations on how the processes and events they observe occur. The primary role of applying theories in research is to provide a clear understanding of the concepts the researchers are trying to look into. One of the conceptual theories that have been applied extensively in nursing is the King’s interacting systems framework and theory of goal attainment. This theory, as pointed out by Caceres (2015), provides the schema for nurses and researchers who are interested in functional status.

The King’s theory of goal attainment was used in a study by Kohowaja (2006) to evaluate the effect of the implementation of a clinical pathway for the surgical procedure of Transurethral resection of the prostate on various issues including patient and nursing staff satisfaction, the clinical quality and the cost of care. The researchers in this study employed a quasi-experimental non-equivalent control group study design with the clinical pathway as the main intervention (Kohowaja, 2006). The King’s goal attainment model was applied and tested in this study to evaluate the potential benefits of the transurethral resection of the prostate (McQueen, Cockroft, & Mullins, 2017). The use of the King’s goal attainment theory in this study had several benefits. The researchers were able to determine the role of interpersonal relationships, communication, and information during surgical procedures. This theory was selected for this study since it views all nursing processes as central to goal setting and goals’ attainment in nurse-client interactions. The application of the goals attainment theory in this study allowed the researcher to carry out a comprehensive evaluation of the patients, make appropriate diagnoses, evaluate outcomes and set achievable goals (Kohowaja, 2006).
